WHAT IS ARMCHAIR YOGA?

Armchair Yoga provides a safe, seated fitness routine for people interested in increasing aerobic capacity and overall body strengthening, stretching and relaxation. This type of exercise is recommended by doctors, physical therapists, nutritionists and other health educators for people who need to limit vigorous physical activity because of preference, lifestyle, age or disability. Because Armchair Yoga includes stretching as well as abdominal breathing, it is an excellent method for lowering blood pressure, increasing stamina, muscle tone, flexibility, coordination and a sense of well being.

According to Marcia Garrell, MSW, Executive Director of the Golden Slipper Center for Seniors, many seniors often sit much of the day, typically because they're in pain, or are afraid they may fall if they try something physically demanding. However, because movement is important to help reduce pain and promote fitness, exercise programs such as Armchair Yoga are becoming increasingly popular. Armchair Yoga gives seniors a viable exercise alternative to help them stay healthy and move in a safe way.

Armchair Yoga is also an excellent way for expectant mothers, particularly those who have physical restrictions, to prepare for birth. During pregnancy, the breathing and body awareness can help you stay connected with your changing body as well as improving your current physical health. In addition, Armchair Yoga effectively enhances the relaxation and stress reduction that is so necessary for mothers-to-be.

If you aren’t ready or able to participate in an organized class, or you are hesitant to join a class already in progress, a video or online yoga program can be just as beneficial. In fact, videotapes, audiotapes and yoga online are all great ways to learn yoga. Yoga online resources include everything from class information, to “posture of the week”, to peer support to spiritual guidance and inspiration.

In summary, even if you have physical restrictions, you can learn how movement can be applied to therapeutic change and personal transformation with the regular practice of yoga.

Note: Always consult with a professional health care advisor before beginning any physical fitness program.
