What Are the Risks If You Don’t Exercise?

We all deal with the demands of long hours at work, too much time spent staring at a computer screen and other realities that lead to pushing working out way down on the totem pole of priorities. Rationally, we know we should exercise and eat better and take better care of ourselves, but those things often seem to get lost in the shuffle of our day-to-day lives.

So, how important is working out and what are the risks if you don’t exercise? Would you be surprised to learn that living a sedentary lifestyle is more dangerous to your health than smoking? A University of Hong Kong and Department of Health study revealed that 20 percent of all deaths of people 35 and older were attributed to a lack of physical activity. In addition, a lack of physical activity increased the risk of dying of cancer 45 percent for men and 28 percent for women, and the risk of dying from respiratory ailments 92 percent for men and 75 percent for women. The risk of dying from heart disease was 52 percent higher for men and 28 percent higher for women due to a lack of physical activity. If you have ever asked yourself, “What are the risks if you don’t exercise?”—these frightening statistics should adequately answer that question.

According to a study by Duke University Medical Center, a sedentary lifestyle leads to increases in visceral fat, which accumulates around the organs inside the belly. The study showed an 8.6-percent increase in visceral fat in only six months due to lack of exercise; approximately four pounds per year were gained by patients who did not exercise. Insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease and other metabolic syndromes have been linked to increased levels of visceral fat, making a sedentary lifestyle very dangerous.

Exercise can help you sleep better; control weight; improve resistance to fight infections; lower your risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes; and allow your brain to work better and smarter. While at least 30 minutes of exercise a day are needed to see weight loss benefits, 60 minutes a day is the best solution.
